Oxford Prospects and Global Development Institute

Welcome to the Oxford Prospects and Global Development Institute. The Institute, based at the Annexe Offices on the Wolfson College site, works collaboratively with colleges and departments across the Oxford University community.

Oxford Prospects and Global Development Institute exists to promote discussion and inspire new ideas across boundaries of discipline, culture, nation, politics. We do this by bringing together students, scholars, and distinguished figures to engage collaboratively on the most pressing issues facing our human population.

Since its founding, the Institute has proven to be an impactful new initiative to the wider university community. However, we are aware that today’s turbulent world, the continuity of our mission and constant adaptation to those challenges is more valuable than ever.

Originally focused on the development of East-West relations in the context of globalisation, our reach has expanded well beyond our initial scope of interchanges to encompass participation which is cross-European and is now extending to other countries.

The activities of the Oxford Prospects and Global Development Institute mainly focus on:

- Running annual lectures, termly seminars, and round-table dialogues in line with its research clusters.

- Delivering flagship interdisciplinary research initiatives, including the Mo Yan Interdisciplinary Writing Project, which convenes leading global scholars and Nobel Laureates across literature, science, and culture through annual lectures, visiting residencies, and cross-collegiate collaboration.

- Hosting visiting scholars and research associates from academia and practitioners.

- Facilitating researchers and scholars from Oxford to visit academic institutions elsewhere in support of the exchange of academics and staff.

- Producing publications resulting from its research activities.

- Providing Oxford students to participate in study abroad/research opportunities.

- Convening international research programmes such as The Future of Humanities and AI, bringing together scholars from across disciplines to explore digital culture, AI governance, and the societal impact of emerging technologies, while supporting Oxford students through funded research travel, workshops, and opportunities to present their work.

- Running high-level programmes for policy-makers and business leaders.

‘’Our strategic plan for the next years has three main goals:

Strengthen our research-base and outputs through intensified involvement with leading and emerging researchers;

Diversify our collaborative partnerships and global networks to include leading academic institutions, think-tanks, inter-governmental agencies and NGOs;

Maintain and enhance our research priorities, for integrated contribution within the University to address those global challenges we are facing;”

Dr Shidong Wang, Director of the Institute
